Essay on What is Plagiarism and How to Avoid It - 557 Words

Plagiarism, what is it and how to avoid it has been a major question on every students’ mind. Sure it is easy just to copy and paste and take all the credit for the work that another individual put in, but is it worth it? According to WPA, Writing Program Administrators, the definition of plagiarism as states, â€Å"plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source.† Plagiarism has always concerned teachers and administrators, who want students’ work to repre ¬sent their own efforts and to reflect the outcomes of their learning. However, with the advent of the Internet and easy access to almost limitless written material on†¦show more content†¦Although no excuse will lessen the breach of ethical conduct that such behavior repre ¬sents, understanding why students plagiarize can help teachers to consider how to reduce the op ¬p ortunities for plagiarism in their classrooms. Students may fear failure or fear taking risks in their own work. (http://www.wpacouncil.org). The question is why plagiarism causes so much fear in most of the students who write papers? Students may have poor time-management skills or they may plan poorly for the time and effort required for research-based writing, and believe they have no choice but to plagia ¬rize. Students may view the course, the assignment, the conventions of academic documenta ¬tion, or the consequences of cheating as unimportant. Teachers may present students with assignments so generic or unparticularized that stu ¬dents may believe they are justified in looking for canned responses. Instructors and institutions may fail to report cheating when it does occur, or may not enforce appropriate penalties. (http://www.wpacouncil.org). In The New Century Handbook, there are a few helpful ways described to avoid plagiarism. Step one is to take accurate, usable notes. Step two to record complete citation (bibliographic) information along with your notes. Step three is to determine when acknowledgment is needed. Step four; avoid copying and pasting information (text or graphics) from the Intern et into your paper. The Life and History of Winston S. Churchill free essay sample

Winston Churchill Winston S. Churchill was a former prime minister of England during 1940 to 1945 and 1951 to 1955. He had been well known for his leadership, oratory skills and bold statements regarding political issues (internationally and locally). He was also described as being: bold, confident, manipulative, courageous, determined, outspoken, brave, and stubborn. Born into the likes of a rich family, he often undervalued the importance and value of money reflecting at times during his time as Prime Minister. As he matured, he often contemplated between a life in the army or in Parliament. His contemplation became his reality as he would â€Å"switch† between the army and Parliament as an adult. While in the army serving in various places, he became an accomplished writer and war reporter while also showing his outgoing personality. Through multiple years of this experience, he developed his writing skills and his oratory skills while being involved in world issues. We will write a custom essay sample on The Life and History of Winston S. Churchill or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Soon he developed his â€Å"bold† views on ideas (e. g. less influence in India) and having iron fist strength in his beliefs and opinions. When we finally decided Parliament was the right home for him, the Nazis’ and Hitler were preparing for their â€Å"blitzkrieg† and were preparing for the starting phases of WW2. Churchill started to realize the threat this posed and voiced out to the government in 1939 that the English government had to be more â€Å"pro-active† about Hitler. Churchill’s predictions came out true and the threat posed became imminent to the English government after the invasion on Norway and the failed campaign in Norway as well. Churchill came out as Prime Minister in 1940 after the previous Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, resigned. Right off the bat, he allotted majority of finances into the military task forces and declared war on Germany. He also stated his steadfast refusal to consider defeat, surrender or compromise peace with Hitler. Later when major countries (e. g. France) fell under the blitzkrieg, Churchill embodied his country’s will to resist and continue fighting the war. His oratory (particularly his speeches and radio broadcasts) inspired the British men. These acts helped inspire British resistance, the only active resistance against Hitler and his Nazi forces. Churchill had also spent numerous hours with the British people who were suffering from air raids by the Luftwaffe and typing numerous letters to get U. S. A into the war. Over the next few years when Russia and U. S. A had become allies and began closing in on Germany, Churchill knew this war was over and the allies had won. His prediction was, again, correct. When he announced this, he said, â€Å"This is your victory. The people shouted: No, it is yours. † Many people around the world appreciated the efforts and actions of Churchill; however, with the pinnacle of military victory, he tasted political defeat. The actions of what Winston Churchill had done for all the British people and everyone around the world is beyond words. Without him, Britain and many other countries would have been in serious trouble during WW2 and the firmness of his beliefs had inspired everyone to truly believe in their ideologies, something that we have seen quite a bit since Churchill’s time period. Some examples: Martin Luther King Jr. , Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, Arab Springs protests. They had all believed in their ideologies and proved it to themselves and the world, something great Churchill had started and shown the world.

The Prince and the Political System free essay sample

This paper examines how Machiavelli viewed the political system, discussing what constitutes a successful leader, how to govern a nation and maintain strength and political power, no matter by what means, no matter what the cost. This paper discusses Niccolo Machiavellis famous work on how to governing, The Prince. The author examines Machiavellis beliefs regarding ones rise to power, and how to maintain such control. His theory, still practiced in modern times, states that a strong leader will do whatever he can to maintain power, use as much force and deception necessary, but only if for the absolute good of the people, not for his own personal benefit. Throughout The Prince, Machiavelli refers to virt?, or the characteristic that is needed in any great leader. He also says that Agathocles doesnt have this quality for the way in which he takes the power in Syracuse. Because of this, it is important to define virt? so that we can better determine if Agathocles act displays virt?. Corporate Social Responsibility Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words - 1

Corporate Social Responsibility - Essay Example The main goal of creating internal business policies dedicated to advancing corporate social responsibility is to ensure that the organisation takes direct responsibility for regulatory compliance and encourage the production of positive outcomes that impact a diverse group of organisational stakeholders. There are some members of society that believe corporate social responsibility detracts from the organisation’s primary objective which, according to respected business theorist Milton Friedman (1970) is to advance attainment of profitability. Other societal stakeholders believe that CSR is a fundamental obligation of businesses to protect the interests of society whilst also maintaining a dependability and conscientiousness, thereby providing a valuable good to all stakeholders in society. This paper critically examines the conception of corporate social responsibility, its historical ramifications, and the potential future implications of contemporary CSR policy for busines s leaders. The historical context of CSR By the late 1800s and early 1900s, with the advancement of modern commercialism and production capacity with thriving industrial businesses, CSR took on a more modern context that did not focus specifically around God’s potential condemnation for failing to abide by ethical and moral principles. Andrew Carnegie, a 19th Century business philanthropist and an influential figure in expanding the prowess of the American steel industry, was a well-respected theorist who often publicly condemned businesses for seeking profitability as a primary goal whilst abandoning social welfare as a business objective. In 1868, Carnegie drafted a letter which stated, â€Å"amassing of wealth is one of the worst species of idolatry. There is no idol that is more debasing than the worship of money† (Klein 2004, p.57). The philanthropist philosophy of Carnegie (as well as several other 19th Century businesspersons) served as a foundation for opening new avenues for business leaders to seek moral and ethical business behaviour as a primary business objective, which laid the foundation for much of modern corporate social responsibility that guides contemporary business practices. From a regulatory perspective, in 1976 the United Nations, utilising the ethical support of many member nations, began establishing a rigorous and strict code of conduct for businesses that would serve as the modern foundation for corporate social responsibility (Asongu 2007). Further, in the 1980s, the pro-business Ronald Reagan presidential administration in the United States began to seek corporate deregulation in an effort to open new trade channels internationally and expand overall corporate profitability. What occurred was a short-term stalling on negotiations that would enhance the UN CSR contract for ethical and responsible business behaviour as businesses sought to expand their domestic operations across the globe, thereby exploiting cheap labo urers and a wide variety of negligent environmental standards. The stalling of long-standing corporate codes of responsibility changed after the post-September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center which again put ethical and moral behaviours into the proverbial spotlight, giving such groups as Amnesty International and the
